School Segregation Article and Response

Today in a couple of English IV classes we began a fascinating discussion on what segregation in schools looks like today.

I found an article that gives a lot of background on the subject

For extra credit, read the article and respond with a comment stating your name and class period, what you learned, how segregation today is different from before Brown vs. the Board of Education, how it is the same, and your reaction to the article

Imagine a stranger that you might see at a bus or subway station. Just by looking at you, what might that person think they know about you? What assumptions would they have?
Assumptions people might think im a respectful young man some might think im rude or ignorant.

How right or wrong would they be about you? How would you want them to think of you?
Depending on the person that think what they think someone important or businesses or companies of course Ima care other than that I Dont care

What do other students at Freire think they know about you?
Other students think they know me because they see me everyday and see the things I Do and my personality.

What would you like your classmates to know about each other that they may not already know?
    Im Around Lol

what you learned, how segregation today is different from before Brown vs. the Board of Education, how it is the same, and your reaction to the article

From this article I learned that there is so many white people who still don't want schools to be segregated after so many years of this being in place. Also, I learned that white people are still doing things as taking their kids out of schools that black kids may attend and will send them to a private school just to go to an “All white school”.

Segregation is different today than back then because back then to attend the same school as a white person students were spit on, abused verbally and physically and even received death threats. Today with segregation the white people are just moving out and withdrawing their kids from public schools into charter or private schools which just creates more segregated schools. The only similarities are that still today the parents and others who support are fighting for their kids to attend the same school as white kids without it being a huge issue.

My reaction to the article is that I was surprised because I didn't know that integrated schools were still a big deal. It’s been so long that blacks and whites have been going to the same schools, churches, bathrooms etc and still people don't accept the fact that it’s always going to be like that. It’s really crazy that there are so many racist out here and just don't know how to accept change. It is sick and s

The person could assume that I’m from Philly just by the way that I dress. They could also assume that I’m a nice person by the smile that always conquers my face.

I would guess that the average person or 7 out of 10 guesses would be accurate guesses of my personality. I would want them to think of me as a young gentleman.

Most people at freire already know me but some think I’m mean when I’m a real nice guy.

I’m real cool and laid back and real down to earth type of guy that’s it.

Segregation today is still around, but not as bad than in the earlier years before the Brown vs BOE case. Segregation in this generation is now taking place in School districts in other states such as Detroit where they have two sides labeled the good part and bad part or suburban and non-suburban school. The segregation impacts the lives of others differently when back then when then in the 50s blacks students were treated unequal and unwanted it the white schools became of their color the white children were probably thinking they are waste of space in the school and probably aren't smart enough to be there. Even if we evolved from the past a lot has changed over 70 years.

The segregation is the same because there is still a division between the groups from being a different race than the other students or coming from a different part of school system in the same state.

My reaction is I am surprised that we had changed drastically over the past 70 years of segregation from empowering blacks to go to any school they choose without feeling there life will be on the line to a having equal rights in the same school regardless of race.

I feel like I have not learned anything I didn't learned of the pass years of my life about segregation and desegregation. Basically this article is putting it in a more interesting way, similar to what I have learned in my recent years. Segragation was way different before Brown V. Board of Education. It literally was a law, the Jim Crow laws, where African Americans were unable to even be in the same vicinity as each other. There were signs that said colored here and whites there. And the "colored" section was always a total downgrade compared to what the whites had. I can say that just because Segragation isn't a law that's enforced anymore there are still huge signs that there is still a separation amongst African American and whites, take schools as an example, just because there is no sign saying whites should go here or blacks go here. Blacks tend to get in where they fit in and that is with there race and whites do the same. I know Freire is majority of black students. I also can say that I am suprised by the change over the course of 70 years but in reality the society presents something different.

For extra credit, read the article and respond with a comment stating your name and class period, what you learned, how segregation today is different from before Brown vs. the Board of Education, how it is the same, and your reaction to the article.

From the article I learned that even though Brown v. Board of Education has been a law for so many years, there are still a lot of people who are unhappy about it. Even though schools have been integrated for years there are parents who are taking their kids out of public schools so that they don’t have to be in class with other black kids.

Segregation is different today than it was before Brown v. Board of education because today blacks and whites are allowed to coincide with each other without it being a problem. The conditions of the schools are the same for everybody because schools are diverse today. Today every student learns the same curriculum so almost everybody has the same opportunity to do something in life. Before Brown v. Board of Education blacks and whites couldn’t be in the same room as each other or some type of altercation would occur. Blacks didn’t have the same
opportunities that whites had back then because whites were higher. And the conditions of the schools were completely different because blacks and whites couldn’t go to school together. It’s not the same at all because the education system back then was totally messed up until Brown v. Board of Education came into place.

My reaction to this article was very surprising because after all these years I never would've thought that people still cared about schools integrating. I think that segregation is never going to end because after decades there is still concern on segregation. I feel real disappointed because I thought that it was the past but I was wrong.

I learned that white segregationists are still upset about schools being integrated after so many years. I also learned that they are even going as far as making their own school district because “Black people don’t contribute to the schools”. The white parents have even taken their children out of the schools because they want them to go to an all white school.

Segregation is different today then how it was when Jim Crow existed. Black students weren’t even allowed to attend the same schools as white students, African Americans and white people couldn’t even be near each other without African Americans being physically and verbally attacked. Segregation today is very different from the 50’s and 60’s. If a few black families move into a community that is mainly white; some of the white families will move out of the are just because a black family moved in. With schools White parents will just remove their children from the school and send them to another school that is all white.

After reading this article I was not at all surprised; because now it’s kind of expected with all the racial issues going on, so the fact that white families are complaining about black students going to mainly white schools doesn’t surprise me at all; which is very sad when you think about it because in this generation there should be little to no racism but some people are experiencing the same amount that their grandparents went through.

  11. After reading the article I learned that the idea of black and white kids going to school together still upsets many white people. White students have even been taken out of their schools by parents to avoid them going to school with blacks. I “realized” that racism and the idea of segregation still exist. I didn’t just learn that but the article was an eye opener and gave me a better idea.
Segregation is still around today but it is presented in a more “formal” way before the Jim Crow Laws or Brown vs Board of Education blacks were not able to attend the same school as whites. Now segregation is illegal but the idea of racism still exist and schools are still integrated but by the choice of the parents or students that attends the school. Every person is granted the same learning techniques however where as before blacks didn’t have the same rights.
My reaction to the article is just hope , though racism isn't how it was before and that was a step to change it still exist and we can’t pretend it dosen’t. Whenever we have the chance to try to push for change anybody who does not agree with the idea of segregation/racism needs to stand up. I find whoever thinks it is ok so to be sick and mistreating somebody over the color of their skin isn’t even a real person.

Imagine a stranger that you might see at a bus or subway station. Just by looking at you, what might that person think they know about you? What assumptions would they have? They might think I'm mean cause I always got a mad face on when I'm at the bus station. Or they may think I'm rude or I'm a nice girl?

How right or wrong would they be about you? How would you want them to think of you? I would want them to think I'm a resepectful young lady.

What do other students at Freire think they know about you? I'm not should what they may think about me. They may think I'm weird or something idk.

What would you like your classmates to know about you that they may not already know? Idk cause I don't really care what they think about me.
