  1. After the debate today, I truly believe that Janie was too hard on Joe. She was hard on Joe because when Joe was dieing she was saying mean stuff to him and she was telling him he was going to die. She did that because she didn't love him. She can’t even go to the ball game. Janie doesn't like how Joe was telling her she can’t talk to other guys that why she was hard on him. Joe want Janie to stay home and me him look good and that why she hard on him when he was dieing and his last see her.

Was Janie too hard on Joe?
Jaine was hard on joe i understand that she wanted to get out and enjoy the town but joe is very overprotective cause he don’t want her to be the wife he feel as though should be laid back but jaine states how she don’t love him and all and he tried to get her out the room she keep on coming at him while death was coming his way.

Tell me what you believe and defend your stance with evidence from the text?
Joe is vary protective with his wife like he just don’t want her to be part of the community but she just want to get out and talk to people just to hear their stories he just feel as though his wife is to good for that like should should have to hear people tell their stories about how they didn’t make it to college

Basically how i'm reading this story it seem like joe just wanted jaine to be a wife that just don’t say nothing that's laid back because back in the days in 1930 or 1940 women back then were laid back like they would be behind their husband to make sure they were good like if he ate or if his day was well it just jaine was a young female that just wanted to hear people's thoughts and story but joe wasn't that type of guy

  3. I think that Janie was too hard on Joe. I think that she was too hard on him because during the last conversation she had with Joe she was being really stern and aggressive which in my opinion led to his death (besides the obvious kidney complications)

  4. After a long and hard debate, I do feel as tho Joe got what he deserved. Not just death as one, but his entire life. We all know Janie loved men, but that did not mean just treat her any kind of way. joe treated her with much disrespect which she did not deserve. Even after she took the time out her day to visit him on his deathbed to basically say her last good byes.

After the debate in class today, I agree that Janie was too hard on Joe. I say this because when Joe was on his death bed that's when she decided to go to him and explain the situation she was having with him. She was being too aggressive knowing his condition. I feel as though this added on stress for him and caused his death a little sooner. She wasn't sympathetic.

  6. After the debate today I think group two had won the debate because it is never right to a man to put they hands on a female and group one was trying to argue that she didn’t speak up about being hit on and I feel is though that she probably was scared of him that’s why she never said nothing to him because she probably have made it worse for her self. We do not what other stuff he had done to her to say that’s the one thing he did bad to her we only know certain stuff. She might have been hard on him but she also should not have to be controlled like the way she was it was not right. She did the right thing.

So after listening to the debate and even though both sides had some very key points i would have to say that Joe deserved what he got for putting his hands on another women which is a big sign of disrespect and also Janie had a part into this as well especially with Joe dying but overall I would agree with the fact that Joe deserved what he got when it was all set in done.

  9. After the debate in class today I believe that Janie was too hard on Joe. Even though she wanted to get her point across that she was being treated a certain way it is disrespectful to argue with some on their deathbed. I don't think he got what he deserved. People that are dying should not have to go through anymore stress then they are already going through. I agree that what Joe did was absolutely wrong but she should of said how she felt before he was dying.

  10. I strongly believe that joe got what was coming for him. I strongly agreed with the side of the class that was debating that joe got what he deserved. They way joe treated Janie was not right no female should get treated like that. When Janie was at joe death bed she spoken her mind of how he was treating her and that he was wrong.

After defending my point and listening to my classmates debate their points; I believe Group 1 won the debate. They debated that Joe got what he deserved. I think the group had a lot of great evidence to support their argument. My group (Group 2) had good evidence, but it just wasn’t enough to support our argument and also our topic which was Janie was too hard on Joe was somewhat difficult to debate. Group 1 also had great responses to our questions.

In my opinion Janie was too hard on Joe. I believe that no one should spend their last moments being told off for how they lived their life; unless they really deserve it and in this case Joe deserved nothing but a peaceful departure. I can see why some people would say that Janie was right for confronting Joe; but in my opinion it was too late and wasn’t timed properly. Janie’s actions caused Joe to die earlier and have a very unpleasant death. Joe did not deserve to die the way he did; I believe Janie had other ways to express how she felt about the way she was treated. One of the most disrespectful things to do is argue with someone when they’re on their deathbed which is why I believe Janie was too hard on Joe.

After debating in class I do still believe that Janie was hard on Joe only because it' was his last moments of being alive. I feel lik she should have had some sympathy because at the end of the day even though he was hitting on her and disrepectung her that was still her husband. Also if I'm on my death bed I wouldn't want to be talked down on when in the case scenario I'm about to die. Instead of telling him off Janie should've just let him spend his last moments at peace.

After the debate today I feel as though my group won. We believe that Janie was too hard on Joe. At first I thought it was impossible to argue this fact but we indeed made it happened and I even convinced myself. I really don't think that there is a right or wrong answer but what made our point more convincing in opposition to the other groups is the evidence. We had three or four different situations where we see Janie being disrespectful and unappreciative to Joe whereas the opposing team only had the fact that Joe hit her, at the end of the day it was wrong but that's weak what else you got? Me personally I believe that they both hurt each other but they fail to see it and neither of them even bothered to bring it up.

I think group 2 won the debate because they were able to use good points in support of Janie and her feelings towards Joe and they were able to use some of our points against us. I think Janie was not wrong and her feelings towards Joe, but I think she went a little too hard considering Joe was on his death bed. I think that Joe got what he deserved because he verbally and physically abusive towards Janie in a way that should never happen in a relationship. There were occasions where he hit her and he yelled at her and that should never happen in a relationship. And that's why Janie was not wrong in her anger towards him.

  15. According to today's class debate I feel as though the side who was arguing that Joe got what he deserved won. I feel this way because they were very descriptive and had a lot of details to back up their main claim. I feel as though that my group was accidentally was arguing their argument because we basically agree with them . They won in my eyes because their evidence made a lot of things more clear. As a result of the debate I wanted to switch sides because they made it vague of what the right decision was. Joe treated Janie as though she wasn't important so why care if bad things for example Karma happen to Joe?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think the side arguing and defending their point of Joe getting what he deserved were the winners. The textual evidence that the side provided was valid and easy to agree with. The point that the other point struggled so much to prove the opposite point made their argument weak and easy to disregard. The way treated Janie mentally, physically, and verbally was all abusive. His mistreatment towards Janie came back as the karma that put him on his death bed. That's why I believe he honestly got what he deserved.

  18. I stand by everything I debated in class. Joe got what he deserved point blank period. He disrespected Janie their whole relationship and still, basically on his deathbed, continued to disrespect her. However Janie felt she needed to release her anger and frustration I feel it was appropriate. Group two won this debate. We had a clear solid argument with specific points to back it up.

  19. Even after today’s debate sessions I still agree with my original statement that Joe got what he deserved. During the marriage Joe still continue show disrespect to Janie even when she was claimed of not doing the “hard” work when in reality she wanted to do that type of work ,but Joe didn’t let her become independent. Janie was doing her role in the relationship by helping around the house with duties such as cooking and cleaning, but Joe is complaining that she isn’t helping him with the same duties he has as he wasn’t worried about her doing those chores. Also when Joe was in the hospital Janie took time to visit him even though she didn’t complain about Joe trying to make him feel less of herself she kept her cool and stayed humble. The karma Joe had coming resulted to his demise, but he didn’t to die even though he was a jerk he just needed to learn his lesson.

  20. After today's debate I would say that group 1 which argued that Janie was too hard on Joe won the debate. Now granite Joe put his hands on Janie that was not the worst factor in their relationship. No man should ever put his hands on a woman but in this time period This was normal, so this argument to me really wasn't as sufficient as another could be. Janie literally waited until Joe was on his deathbed to speak up which was very unsympathetic I know that their argument against this is that Joe never allowed for her to speak up or he had the bigger voice but while Janie was with Logan they were very argumentative and she had absolutely nothing Stopping her from saying what she wanted to say. Also Logan and Joe are similar in some ways so what was it about Joe that made her cower away and not want to speak up and be as witty as she can be. Joe gave her the world and gave her anything she could have asked for he only wanted for her to express her self and speak up but Janie never did she cowered away and waited until he was weak and literally incapable to do anything this is why Janie was to Hard on joe.

  21. I feel as though that group #2 won the debate due to the evidence. Group 2’s was more convincing. Janie was not too hard on Joe because she wanted to make sure he suffered like she did in his final moments. Joe did get what he deserved. I believe that Janie did a good job on telling him off as he was dying and I say this because he hit her hard in fromt of a crowd and by themselves. As if once isn’t enough, joe got what he deserved.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I feel as though both sides were equallly convincing, but I'm leaning towards group 1. Now yes, Joe did put his hands on her and that was not right because a man should never lay his hands on a woman, but 2 wrongs does not a right. Back in this time it was normal and acceptable for men to do this and Joe most likely didn't know why he was in the wrong for this situation. "A mule can only be as stubborn as you let him. Or her" Janie could have stuck up for herself, but she choose not to until he was dying and hopeless. In the end both sides got hurt.

  23. From the class debate we had in class I feel as both group 1 and 2 did good they both had good evidence and good points. For myself I feel like I’m in the middle between who one and my reasoning is because group 1 was right saying people want to peacefully die and Janie had all this time to tell Joe how she felt. In contrast to that I feel as group 2 had good points saying Joe deserved what janie said to him on his death bed and that’s because he put his hands on her in 2 occasions and embraced her in front of the whole town. In my eyes you wouldn’t do that to somebody you married or suppose “love”.

  24. I feel as though my team group #1 won because we came to the debate with more evidence and points to prove our statement. Group #2 kept saying the only one point they had and even after the fact we disproved their point they kept repeating it. We came to the debate prepared and none of our group members disagreed with each Other or agreed for the other team. Group #2 was disorganized and a couple of their group members agreed with our side of the debate. No person wants the love of their life tell them off before they die. Everyone wants a peaceful death. Janie did not let Joe habe a peaceful death, in fact he died crying. Now that memory of him dying like that will haunt her forever.

  25. After the debate in class yesterday I feel as though Janie wasn’t so hard on joe in my eyes she just released her feelings that she couldn’t since she didn’t have a voice. The way he treated Janie was horrible he abused her mentally, and physically. Evidence is when he hit her twice. Also she felt as though she didn’t have a voice around him

    ReplyDelete
  26. After the debate I agree that joe got what he deserved because he was treating Janie that she was not worth anything. If was not dying he would still be treating her the same way he did. The last conversation they had Janie is tell him how she felt and because he is dying he has to feel sympathy.

    ReplyDelete
  27. From the debate in class earlier today I can’t stand for one side. Both arguments were equally convincing. I agree that joe got what he deserved. But I also agree that joe should not have put his hands on Janie. But in this period of time it was normal for men to do things like this. Men were looked at as the dominants of the household so this like this went on normally, so it’s not really as big of a problem as the other group was making it

    ReplyDelete
  28. Personally I believe joe got what he deserves and that janie wasnt to hard on him. For being hurt to janie he deserves the harsh words. Its not janie fault she felt the way she did. She tried to be nice to him but he didnt trust nor believe the words she said. So janie had to right to yell and make him feel bad. Joe deserves the harsg words.

    ReplyDelete
  29. After the debate I believe my group that argued that Joe go what he deserved won because we had a lot of evidence to back up our argument. Joe was a horrible husband to Janie the way he treated her and when he put his hands on her. Joe put Janie through hell but she still went to visit Joe on his deathbed. Everything he put her through he got what he deserved

I think Joe deserving it was convincing because he did a lot to Janie. There was a lot of mental and physical abuse in that relationship. Also they would embarrass each other so they relationship wasn't healthy at all. In a relationship, you shouldn't feel the way Janie felt. So Janie had every right to act the way she did. But I do also think that two wrongs don't make a right. Readers can tell that Janie was fed up so that is why she chose to do the actions she did.

  31. Even though the opposition to my groups stance had good reasons to why they where right believe we won simply because of the proof that during that time period it was almost required for women to be mistreated by their husbands because women;especially black women, were considered second citizens

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think Joe got what he deserves bc he put Janie through a lot and caused her alot of mental pain. I think he should have died peacefully but Janie spoke when she felt it was the right time and it just happened to be when he was dying. He put Janie through a lot so it was kind of like payback.

  33. During the debate I believed that our side won the argument. Deciding after I can still say we won the argument. We had various points throughout our argument and kept out composure while expressing our evidence that connected with our explainations. Furthermore the other argument started to not understand what they was saying so they gave up and wanted to tell the rest of class

  34. Was Janie too hard on Joe?
yes I feel Janie was too hard on joe because during that time it was normal for men to treat women like that, and I also feel as though she had ample time to tell joe about himself but since she decided to wait till he was dying caused the outcome to be harsher than what it had to be.
Did Joe get what he deserved?
yes and no, yes because naturally humans know right from wrong and her knew the way he was treating Janie was wrong and no because nobody deserves to live their last moments on earth with regret they'll get what they deserve in the after life.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I feel as though Joe deserved what Janie said to him. He made his bed now he has to lay in it. He knows what he did to Janie and he deserved to hear it. Getting that off of her chest probably made Janie feel better and he had that coming to him he couldn't just get away with it. He did his dirt and now he is paying for it nobody deserves to get away with something like that it was only a matter of time before Janie would say something and it's ironic how he is on his death bed it's karma. So yes I believe he deserve what Janie said and group 2 won the debate in my opinion it's so easy to defend that he deserved what he got because he did some bad things to Janie.

When first given this assignment I have to admit that I found it challenging as I felt I had to argue a side I didn’t agree with which was that Janie was in fact to hard on joe. Nevertheless as the assignment continued and I began researching quotes to defend joe, my opinion began to change. One quote in particular that made me believe that Janie was being to harsh was when the author said “Janie took a lot of looks at him and she was proud of what she saw”. This shows me that Janie was actually happy with joe at some point despite his “abusive” tendencies. So I believe it was unfair of her to be dismissive of the good things while joe was on his death bed. Also I believe it was the times that caused Joe to be what we see as abusive and not spite of Janie.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think joe didn’t deserve it only because no one deserves to die. I understand how much he put Janie through but that does not give her the benefit of the doubt to say that on his death bed. She married him for a reason so, therefore that had some time of love between them to. So i do feel as though she was to hard on Tony.

  38. Oh and my group won which was the argument that Janie was too harsh on joe because our topic was harder than the other groups meaning we had more of a challenge than them and also because we had good points as well as good quotes ; ) (shout outs to usss)

  39. After debating I still hold my argument that Janie was way too hard on Joe. Although Janie felt mistreated in her marriage she settled for it. She knew how important her voice was referring back to her conversation with nanny about her not being happy with Logan and because she wasn't happy she left. With joe she didn't leave and she allowed him to mistreat her and on his death bed she decided to spill the beans about how she felt which was wrong because every human deserves to die in peace. Joe took care of Janie and did his best to keep her in the finest of things though they miscommunicated a lot that didn't give Janie the right to say how she felt in Joe's last moments. If Janie would have communicated before Joe would have most likely changed. "No matter what Jody did, she said nothing" ( Hurston 76)

After hearing both sides of the debate I think that the side on which Joe got what he deserved won because I think that we had better evidence to back up our claims that we were making. We pulled out multiple quotes and analyzed it thoughtfully and that made our argument sort of strong. Janie was not hard on Joe because at the end of the day he made her feel less worthy than what she really is and that tore her apart because he was her husband and he's the who's suppose to protect her. Joe did get what he deserved because even when he was on his deathbed he didn't want to talk to Janie like that wasn't his wife at the end of the day, he showed his true colors and Jaine was right for what she did. When Janie found out that he was sick she got him a doctor even though they weren't on good terms because at the end of the day that's her husband. I feel like even though they weren't good he didn't have to talk to Janie the way he did, their last couple of days should of been them loving each other for the last minute.

The debate on my groups stands neutral because joe did not deserve to die like that. Its very hard to stand in a fully faithful relationship with someone in this time period. Luckily, he believe that it wasnt his right mind to stand with her so he left her to venture out someone else. I dont think it was right for joe to put his hands on Janie.

Janie was not to hard on Joe because I feel as though Joe treated Janie like no good because of what he lives with and the insecure habits he has as a man with a pretty young woman and I believe he served to be treated and talked to like that because he ain't good at all and Janie just telling the truth the truth is truth and that's how she felt so I don't find anything wrong with it.

  48. i feel as though was to hard on Joe because she waited until when he was about to die to tell him all this pent up aggravation and the fact that she waited until she knew he couldn't do anything back wasn't right. Joe definitely did not deserve what he got i don't agree he should have put his hands on a women but she also shouldn't have messed up his final wishes to be happy when he was about to die because everyone deserves a peaceful death.

  49. After the debate I Think the side who thought Jannie did the right thing won.The point that even though he was on his deathbed, this was the only time she could speak point was very convincing. In the book, I thought Jannie's actions were justified. She has been through so much abuse physically and mentally. Even though she was getting abused, she never spoke on it because women had no voice. Despite Joe being on his deathbed, she decided to speak her mind on everything he has done to her. This was not a harsh action because after years of being abused, she finally has a chance to say something. I believe that Jannie was right because she said that even death did not change Joe.

  52. After the debate, i think that Joe did get what he deserved. He got what he deserved because he never should’ve put his hands on a woman. Whenever a man puts his hands on a woman it shows that he’s less of a man. Hitting a woman may damage her mentally and physically. If Joe didn’t put his hands on Janie, I think that she would’ve mourned his death more than what she did.
