Current Events Connections

In class we analyzed each of the following quotes from 1984
  1. If there is hope, wrote Winston, it lies in the proles.
  2. It was not desirable that the proles should have strong political feelings. All that was required of them was a primitive patriotism which could be appealed to whenever it was necessary to make them accept longer working-hours or shorter rations
  3. Perhaps a lunatic was simply a minority of one.
  4. Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.
Use your analysis to make a connection between one of these quotes and a current event article. Be clear about the connection you are making. Include a link to the article describing the current event or use the story about the president's recent twitter activity found here.

I can draw connections from the quotes used in 1984. I can draw comparisons between the quotes about people that are in poverty in both the book and in real life. Both usually don't have the power and the interest to take part in political situations. I can also draw a comparison to Donald Trump's tweets about fake news. In 1984 news and history are skewed to the ideas and views of the party. This can relate to how some media outlets today have news that might not be all the way true and may include some lies.

  2. in the novel 1984, the world is now a dystopia. There are a certain set of rules for people. Also they all look up to someone named Big Brother. The world is fed lies everyday and the only one that knows the truth is the main character, Winston. HE believes that the only people that can get rid of Big Brother and the Party are the proles. Big Brother and the Party promote hate. This reminds me of president Donald Trump retweeting muslims committing crimes and other hateful things. The first quote reminds me of how there are only a certain amount of people that can possibly take DT out of office. Here, you can see the connection with the dystopia in the book and the real world. Some people may know the actual truth but they never share it because they’re too afraid of the consequences.

  3. I can draw many connections from the fake world to the real world. I can compare the book 1984 to the real world because It is talking about the real world and uses the stuff as we use. I can compare Donald Trump tweets to the fake pages tweets. There are many things to compare in this life. You really don’t know what the real truth is until you see it actually everything you hear don’t always have to be true. You should not always believe everything you hear. I think you should see things before you try to believe It because sometimes It can be lies.

I can draw connections from the quotes in the novel 1984 and Donald Trump’s tweets. Firstly the connection about people living in poverty in the novel and in real life. In the novel people living in poverty didn’t really have a role when it came to political issues or situations. In real life people living in poverty definitely don’t have a role in politics or political situations because it's not important to them. Another connection would be Donald Trump’s tweet about fake news. In the novel, the news and some history are fabricated and distorted to a certain party of individuals. In real life some news is fabricated to make certain people look good or bad in the public eye.

  5. In the story 1984 is about a society that is dystopia where people have to be conceived to be perfect with harsh rules to follow. With a character name Winston who disagree with the society and believe they deserve better. I’m the book people wants freedom and to be treated well. Just how In today society we are fighting for freedom and equality such as the “Black Lives Matters” movement. We have to remind some people that we are human too. We matter. In 1984 it states “freedom is freedom” which is true and today society we just want freedom and equality.

  7. These quotes all somewhat connect to Donald Trump. The one that stuck out to me the most was the first one. Things are getting out of hand in the world and in the book. Clearly the only hope we have is in the proles (working class). Trump is more concerned about fake tweets like the people in 1984 are more concerned about “Big Brother”. Someone who constantly tells them lies and has them living in a unhappy environment. I suppose you can say Trump is our “Big Brother”.

  8. A connection can be made from the book 1984 and Donald Trump's tweet's. One connection one can make is from the people in the book living in poverty. In the book living in poverty (prole's) you didn't really have a feeling against the political issues taking place. And in the real world those who live in poverty definitely doesn't have a say in political issues because they dont think it's an important thing. Also Trump's fake news tweets is an connection. The book news and history isn't always written correctly and is open to party members only. The real worlds news is also written in correctly/distorted to allow individuals to look good/bad.

“Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows”. I believe that whoever let that man free that killed the young girl should have been punished. Now he has the freedom do the same actions. Even though he got deported after the decision, he’s still out here as a killer. So this Mexican man was granted freedom once again after already being in prison. It clearly is showing that one can get away with murder if they have the right lawyers and excuses. No one should ever be excluded from a sentence for murdering someone. If they did it once, they’ll sure enough do It again.

  10. I can draw connections from the quotes used in 1984. I can compare the book to the real world because the book is like the opposite. Everything is changed in the book, more like a dystopian life. The world in the book is just filled with synthetic things and everything else. Unlike the real world everything is set and normal, things arent really as strange. Another connection is with Donald Trump with fake news, the novel displays news in a different way, by changing it in a different way and specifing it individually. In real life news are exposed negatively or positively, making it look its best or worse. That is why its good to test things out before making a final decision.

  11. If there’s any hope, wrote Winston, it lies in the proles. This quote can calmly be related and connected to you all’s president. The quote is saying that if there’s any hope in turning the dystopian society into a better place it lies with the proles which are the citizens outside of the party. The party is not going to destroy each other from within their so in order to make this movement work they need people outside of the party to make the change. “President” Trump is a horrible leader and the people in his circle are not going to take him out simply because they’re in his circle. The only way we can make a change for our country is if the citizens do it. The citizens in our world are the proles of their world.

  12. Donald Trump is not a big fan of the media because unlike others they show how horrible his behavior as a president is. Donald Trump comes negatively at every website that attacks him in a way he feels is not right. Trump often forgets that people have the right to freedom of speech. I can draw Donald Trump most recent behavior to one of the quotes from 1984 that's states " Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows". What this quote is trying to say that if one person can openly say adding two and two together gives you four and many people will beloieve it than that is having freedom. Donald Trump would most likely contradict how Winston feels when he says things like that. This particular quote shows that there are two kinds of people in this world people that believe in freedom is speech and people that do not. 1984 shows that two kinds of people often.

  13. From looking at the quotes and the tweets I can definitely draw conclusions. In 1984, the world in which they live in is a dystopia. The characters revolve around the unknown thing named “Big Brother” which in a way is a protagonist because of all the bad control “it” has over the citizens. The fourth quote above can relate to both the book and Trumps tweets. In a way Trump has control of our freedom because he is inevitably the 45th President which gives him a lot of power. With that power comes Trumps cockiness which always seems to make him go on power trips and that results in changes to the US law which affects our freedom. Big Brother and Trump are alike.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The quote “ Perhaps it’s a lunatic..” I can make comparisons with Trump because he always doesn’t mind blowing things with disrespecting his components in the election. Now Trump is telling us that basically we shouldn’t trust none of what was taught to us. I don’t even know why he is in charge and I know the proles are questioning the same thing about these Party leaders the Thought Crime and everyone that’s helping create this mess. Another quote “Freedom is freedom” is a very strong quote this quote means to me that if we don’t know are history and the truth to the world we live in we don’t have freedom. If it’s a crime for telling the truth then it’s not freedom. In 1984 the people there have no freedom they are told so many lies and the history is being changed everyday one day you think you are at war and then you see us as peace makers with another going to war for one another. How is this freedom and all your doing is wanting me to settle for lies. I don’t have freedom because I don’t even know my history and so much more. Trump sparks the same idea with spilling news like that he is now making us question scientific research because what Trump is throwing out there in public it’s the President hello why wouldn’t we want to believe the lunatic.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I am compare a lot of thing to the novel 1984. The fourth quote can relate to modern day with trump tweets and the fake pages that commented. Donald trump is not a big fan of the social media. If someone attacks him he will come right back at them. In the novel there is this “Big Brother” and he controls everything, just like in our society the president controls a lot of the political things that goes on. Also this can relate to school because the head of the school controls who will get accepted or not. With those powers comes pettiness and cockiness.

  16. From President Trump tweets and reading and analzying the novel 1984 I can come to an conclusion. In the novel 1984 the citizens live in an dystopian society which means the citizens are controlled by the government, what they say basically they have to do. Regardless if they feel different about it and even disagree with what the government put in place the citizens have to go by it. In my eyes from President Trump tweets I sort of feel as he is trying to control us the American people. Trump feel as he can go on Twitter and write what he feels and talk down on certain American people but do not realize he is going against everything that's in place." Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows" This quote from 1984 draw a feeling of Trump recent behavior. From making connections between Trump's tweets and the novel 1984 I would not believe everything you hear, try and see things for yourself.

  17. I can draw connections from the quotes in 1984. I can see from reading President Trump tweets and from reading the novel 1984 their is a major connection. In 1984 the citizens live in a dystopian society which means they must listen to everything the government says. I feel like today we have to listen to everything the government has to say and if we don’t we’ll be punished for it. Today in society, we are ruled by the government no matter what. Also, Trump pays too much attention to social media, if someone comes at him he feels the need to say something back. Trump is acting unprofessional instead of acting like a president.

The last Donald Trump tweet about him wanting CNN should be boycotted, connects to the first quote in the book 1984. It connects because their hopes are in the proles. CNN provides news to the people to know information in the world. Because Trump dislikes this news resource, he wishes that the news source be cancelled. This will cause the people to be clueless to what’s going on. Like in the book, their knowledge of things comes from whatever the government gives them. Taking away things from the people will cause them to be oppressed and then come to have hope to give them strength.

  20. In the novel 1984 i can mak a lot of connections to todays society. I can draw comparisons between the quotes about people that are in poverty and don’t have the power to stand up against government unfairly choices. In both the book and in real life. Both usually don't have the power and the interest to take part in political situations. I can also draw a comparison to Donald Trump's tweets about fake news. In 1984 news and history are skewed to the ideas and views of the party. This can relate to how some media outlets today have news that might not be all the way true and may include some lies. On the internet you can post something and take it don’t like it was never there.

  21. In the novel 1984 the citizens live in an dystopian society. Their are an huge amount of rules the citizens have to follow. They also look up to some one named “Big Brother”. The world they are living in is an world full of lies but only Winston the main character of 1984 knows that. Winston feel ass the people can only stop the lies and the hate that the party (government) and Big Brother promotes. This connects to President Trump because I remember when Trump was retweeting hateful things on his tweet page. Looking at the 1st quote I took that only US the people can take president Donald Trump out of office. That connects to how Winston feels about “Big Brother”

  22. I can make between 1984 and Donald Trump. Donald Trump uses the to attack those who oppose him. In the book the government also used politics to silence and oppress their citizens. Both the book and Donald Trump are the same because everyone hopes that they both would power. Donald dislikes CNN news and wishes that it was cancelled. How are we supposed to get our news if he's trying to get rid of them. Just like the book where they threaten people's privacy to gain control

  23. In the novel 1984 there a plenty of comparisons with modern day problems. Furthermore in there society there citizens have to think, do, speak what the government says, if not there will be a consequence. In contrast modern day we aren’t held in that predicament in our environment. But the tweets that trumps says other than using his power as a man and a president he uses his power behind a phone and his twitter fingers. Social media shouldn’t be his outlet to expressing how he feels because he isn’t just a average person, he is the person who runs our country. Moreover in 1984 since the citizens only listen to the government that’s all they know and just like trump tweets everybody reads them cause he is the president. Also media puts out a lot of information so in modern time whatever media say most likely people are going to believe it.

  24. From analyzing 1984 and reading President Trump tweets i can draw a conclusion . 1984 is a dystopian society which means anything the government says they just do no matter what they believe in.Winston knows that they live in a world full of lies but he is the only one who knows that I feel everybody is entitled to their own opinion and beliefs but it's just simply ignorant for the president of the United States who has control over all the ethnicities living within to pick and choose who he like and he singles out who he wants to oppress. As president his job is to love and take care of everybody to his best ability and through his tweets and retweets he doesnf accomplish his job as president. I can relate or connect because being a girl we are almost always oppressed. We are told we can't do certain things because we aren't strong enough mentally or physically. We are put down a lot and that's why we don't have a female president because it's "normal" to only have a male as president.

  25. I can draw connections from the quote in 1984. I can draw a comparisons between the Quote because the citizens live in a controlled government and with trump tweets and comments I feel as though he try to controll America. Another comparison with the quote and people in real life people are in poverty so have the chance to be in politics. And that’s what make the government think they can controll people also Donald trump as well.

  26. Winston "If there is hope, wrote Winston, it lies in the proles." In the real world the poor hard working people in the communities don't have knowledge about the government. If they took the time to actually do some research they could actually know what's going on. In order for there to be a change or hope the proles have to become conscious. The proles have a larger population than anybody else so if they wanted to they could over throw the government. This connects to the real world because the people just sit by in there communities and laws get passed and they don't actually know how the laws affects them. If they would just take some time out there day and see if this law is actually good for them or not there would be hope of change. The people in the book 1984 just sit by and listen to their leader as in the real world. The proles can make a change because without their vote there wouldn't be a leader.

  27. There are many connections that I can make with the book 1984 and the tweets. The book is a fake world and we know that Donald Trump is fake and makes comments that he can not back up. Just like Big Brother people look up to him for answers. The government tries to cover it up in the book and in real life. He is supposed to love the people and have respect but Big Brother nor Donald Trump have that.

I feel like when it comes to the quote "if theres hope, it lies in the proles it can me anything in today's rules.Like what's happening in libya right now all we can do is pray for the people that are being sold to others.I also think that it it's up to us as the world to help out when it comes to this issue.hope is what the positivity of the mind is and with that anything is possible. What proles mean to me is the state of being meaning what were capable of doing.Current events are in need of hope in proles in the world. With us working together anything is possible.

  29. I can from the post trump put up were horrible as it relates to the first quote from 1984 about freedom. The quote from 1984 is about Winston stating there isn’t any freedom unless the workers do something about it which probably means society instead of just workers. I can relate this to now about Trumps actions as he is restricting a religion from being free as he is like the Party from 1984. The party and trump are both tormentors of race and religion as they make life hard. I want this to change as I am disgusted. The people need to protest against his outlandish acts. People can make change if they try so we need to unite if we want to strive.

  31. In the novel 1984, the the society is a dystopia and there are many similarities to the real world. In the novel the government destroys history, tells everyone's lies and there isn't anything anyone can really do. The main character Winston is aware of the lies the government tells and therefore rebels, while everyone else just takes these lies in. Winston believes that the proles which are a higher class of people are the only one that can successfully revolt against the government. The first quote reminds me of how few people there are that can actually do things that can disrupt the government or dethrone Donald Trump. This connects to the novel because the proles are seen as the only people that can take down the government. As one can see the connection between the real world and the dystopia in the novel is very relative.

  32. The quote “It was not desirable that the proles should have strong political feelings. All that was required of them was a primitive patriotism which could be appealed to whenever it was necessary to make them accept longer working-hours or shorter rations” can be connected to the current event article about Donald Trump being reminded to put his hand over his heart during the national anthem. That isn't a form of patriotism so Donald Trump is acting exactly like the proles. But most of the similarities between trump and the book is the government and just how it effects people lives.

  34. 1984 brings up amazing points that can be seen in real life experiences. This is shown by Trump actions towards the government and the people they govern. This can be shown by the new tax law that is helping the richer. That is why I think that let more of the poor vote cause they are able to see through the eyes of the hard working. That is why I agree with the quote "If there is hope, wrote Winston, it lies in the proles." Because the hardworking will be able to change the ideals of world.

Trump Shares Inflammatory Anti-Muslim Videos, and Britain’s Leader Condemns Them.
Basically it like trump is posting bad videos about these muslims that don’t have to do with nothing in the video in it’s like people around the world starting to feel some type of way because trump is in office and people that are seeing this are going to believe what's going on in the videos. The bad part about is that it’s making a lot of muslim look bad cause a lot people gonna think their truest because of that video cause only one man can change the world and the world not really good cause he building a wall that keeping mexicanos from coming over and he stop muslims from traveling from wherever their to the united states and all that's gone do is bring war to our country because when obama was in office he changed a lot of problem that was going on when other countries and now since trump got in office where losing lot of our allies that’s why i'm saying one man can put a change on the world and make it way different than what it was.

  36. The first quote, "If there is hope, wrote Winston, it lies in the proles", is written to explain the Lottery and its meaning to the Proles. The proles are considered the lower class thus giving a great comparison to the lower class in America today. One article that draws out this comparison, http://money.cnn.com/2016/01/12/news/companies/powerball-lottery-games-poor/index.html, talks about how the lottery gives hope to the poor but takes their money. The author of this article, Ahiza Garcia, wrote that the large percent of people that play lottery scratch-offs have a low income. These people with low incomes spend a large percentage of their money of the lottery which is obviously less than the rich. It is argued that a chance to win a lot of money can catch the eye of any income. However, the article argues that the need for such a chance is greater for the poor than the rich. I say that this is a strong example of our government making the rich, richer and keeping the poor, poor. Thankfully, this epidemic is not as large as in 1984-but the book opens our eyes to what is really going on in our world using extremes like this.

  38. I believe the quote "Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows" resembles the saying "I gave you an inch, you took a mile". I believe the quote was saying if you give people a little bit of freedom that they will tend to take advantage of that. Those twitter post relate to these quotes in my eyes. Twitter gives people the power to say what they want but this person has found a way to take advantage of such a simple blessing. Both the quote from the book and the President's retweet shows an oppression of two minority groups. The quote shows why proles are not allowed basic freedoms because they would end up discovering things The Party doesn't want them to know. The retweet show Trump promoting false stories in order to promote a message of hatred of Muslims towards his American citizens mind. The Party and Trump are similar in the aspect that they want to control what people think even though Trump isn't as extreme.

  39. There are many connections between 1984 and Donald Trump tweets. In the novel 1984, the world is a dystopia which means people are ruled by someone who is called “Big Brother.” The world is constantly being lied to and no one knows the truth except Winston. This relates to when Donald Trump retweeted muslims committing crimes as a shame.
The first quote connects to the fact that there really isnt anyone who can control or stop Donald Trump from the terrible things he is doing. This connects to 1984 because the proles (higher ups) are the only ones that can take down the government. Therefore, these connections between today’s real world and the dystopia in 1984 have many things in common.

  40. Being able to say what you want to say is freedom of speech. Even though Donald Trump has freedom of speech to say what he wants to say on Twitter, is very inappropiate. He was also accused of sexual assault, so he shouldn't be able to say things like this when Matt Lauer does the same thing and losea his job.

  41. There is many connections between 1984 and the tweets that Donald Trump retweet. He used false information to trick people into thinking that Muslims are bad even though the information that was given was false or over exaggerated. In 1984, the people there are constantly lied into thinking that the way they are living is okay and that freedom of speech is bad. This shows that if a lie is told more than enough times it can change a person's way of thinking and can obtain control over the weak. This makes me think of a quote in 1984, when Winston states, "If there is hope, wrote Winston, it lies in the proles." Because if you know the truth and work hard enough, you can accomplish anything no matter if someone tells you otherwise.

  42. Donald Trump has made multiple lies since he was running for president and it has caused many problems because the lies that he is spreading sometimes are very serious and just not okay to be said. He spreads so much false information and people are believing most of what he is saying because he tries his hardest to brainwash people into believing his false information. In 1984 one of the main characters Winston says " Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows." He is saying that in order to have freedom you have to believe in what you think and never let anyone's opinion sway your mind somewhere else just because the majorly of people think otherwise. In the novel the government makes up information and brainwashes people into believing that what they say is correct no matter if it makes sense or not. Winston feels like the government is wrong in what they say to their people because the information is not true and at times there's not even logic to it. This relates to Trump because he as well spreads false information to people and most of the time he tries to brainwash others into believing that what he says is true when it's not.
